Product Types, as you may have guessed, indicate what kind of product that is being offered. It is different than the OEM/Manufacturer, or Commodity Group, category, attributes, or other characteristics that you may associate with a part.
Product Types, for the purpose of eCommerce and Salesforce, designate whether this is a NEW product
NEW could contain Harvard, PARTSCO or Legacy products.
For example, in the screenshot below, you can see that the SKU actually ends with -LEG (for Legacy) but the Product Type is NEW.
At some point in the future, we may separate out the Legacy product into it's own Product Type but for now it is included in NEW.
REPAIR is any product we are going to offer repair services on. This could be either a priced repair, or an EVAL.
Repairs always start out with a Quote. This allows a few extra steps to be done, so that the CSR team can send out a RMA and the customer can send in their item for Evaluation and Repair.
An EVAL starts out as a zero dollar quote and the customer must send it the product to get a quote. to fix.
No matter what the Product Type is, if the price on the website shows zero dollars, the item will follow the Evaluation Quote process.
The screenshot below is for a zero dollar repair. The SKU ends with -REP and the Product Type is REPAIR.
REFURBISH contains products from IPS or our Vendors which have been returned, certified, and resold. Refurbished items are most often warrantied.
Looking at the Product record in Salesforce, this Product ID ends in -REF and the Product Price Type is Refurb.
SURPLUS
Surplus items have been bought by IPS with the specific intention of reselling them.
You will notice that, in reality, there is only one SKU and the Product Type Suffix (-NEW, -REP, etc) is added to the end.
This makes it faster for our team to set up products in the eCommerce store.
